| 08/02/2013 | ![]() | I’ve been consulting for a number of years and from time to time had doubts regarding; is this the right way to engage (build rapport with the customer), should I manage conflict in this way, is this workshop too structured, the list goes on. I’m relieved to say that most of the things I’m doing are right, there’s room for improvement of course, but the real value for me with this workshop was small amount of things that I wasn’t doing correctly. This is where my self-doubt creeps in. Now I can be confident in the way I engage with all stake holders and manage relationships based on a common framework of building rapport (common understanding) trust, whilst keeping a keen eye on my stakeholder’s perceived value. - Justin |

One change I felt would have improved the course for me was on the last day where we spent some time preparing for the presentation. I would have preferred to have a group discussion around what should or shouldn’t be presented and in what manner. We could have, for example, been given a list of details/solutions/etc and then discussed as a group what we would emphasise to a V&V person and what to a P&C person. I have been able to take away a number of very simply yet practcal tips from the course that I have been able to easily implement in my day to day work. I feel more in control of my crazy workload through some very simple time management ideas that was explained. While attendees attempt all the role playing - usually with presenters - I would have liked occasionally to watch some 'experts' do some of the role playing (in person or on video) and we all then focus on assessing the learnings. No institute can provide this insight as this is really the juice of expert’s own lifetime experiences and their passion in delivering this was quite palpable. Once gone through the course, one can’t say that he/she doesn’t know what the result of a meeting would be or why a relationship (with anyone in the world i.e. client, internal stakeholders or even with your family members or friends) is evolving the way it is evolving as all arrows to build effective relationships or to have effective meetings have been put in our quiver (conscious competence). I found the workshop very useful in that i left with specific tools i can apply (which is what i was after at the start of the ourse). This was helped by the sequencing of the topics, the depth to which it was discussed, and the visual aids(also found in the book) which helped me alot to understand and apply the information. For example: We would classify our own personality types, then talk about each of the four types, then we would learn to 'identify' in a real life situation, and then finally the tools to help in interacting with other types. I'm not sure it was intentional, but in my office there are very few F&H and V&V (at least in my department focused on analysis/data systems). So having the people in the workshop that belong to these types was very helpful in giving me examples of how to identify them. With regards to the facilitation, I found myself quite interested throughout (not something i can say for many other courese i've been to!) so credit to Ralph on his facilitation skills and getting us motivated to participate in the various activities. - Edonn - Edonn |

It was good to get a better understanding of what an individuals communication style could be in order to have that add value conversation. Understanding how to build trust, Rapport and Value when dealing with peers and your more senior counterparts was also quite good. Work Management- It was good to understand that not all requests are urgent and that we do not need to responded to immediately and rather understanding in what priority we can better manage our daily work/work-flow. Categorising work in order of Urgent and Important, Just Do it, Don't bother etc type prioritisation will improve efficiency and better time management. Facilitation exercise was quite interesting as it enabled participants to understand the process of what facilitation is and how to collate info and deliver outcomes. Being able to use skills to influence to get outcomes rather that authority driven would prove more powerful way of managing outcomes, however understanding that in some instances authority must also form part of direction was a good learning. Role playing was quite entertaining as well as educational, being able to interact with a customer and understanding the right types of questions to ask to get best value. Open ended questioning (what, how, when etc) and its effectiveness was a good knowledge sharing. Team activity proved quite valuable where participants had to follow specific instructions from their Team Leaders and helping each other by asking the right questions to complete the given task was a good. It enabled the team members to work as a team, contribute and follow instructions but at the same time asking out of the box questions to achieve a task. What could have been better: Possibly little more role playing around customer interaction and the impact on customer when not getting it right the first time or not meeting customer expectation just because we did not listen to customer needs. My personal learning from the workshop will enable me to take an extra time when interacting with people to analyse/understand their needs before taking action. This will need to be practiced and become a new habit. I would recommend the workshop. Facilitators were very professional and knew their material and also provided a good learning atmosphere where participants were encouraged to contribute. This type of workshop would be more beneficial for new Team Managers, Team Leaders or individuals with leadership potential. Overall great 3 days with lots of fun along the way which made the workshop more interesting. - Aydin |

The only thing I would have changed would be to mix up the seating arrangements each day so participants could spend time with each of other participants. The presenters were professional for the most part; some of the humour used was a bit inappropriate at times. Many of the lessons sevred as a great reminder for our we should go about business. The workshop was well facilitated and even the potentially very "hit & miss" activity of roll playing was managed in a way that allowed the benefits to far outway any kind of awkwardness. Most notably, the skills suggested for effective communciation are invaluable tools for consultants. What I have learned I can put into practice at work and pass the information along to my teenagers to give them a head start. Looking back on this I wish I had done this course years ago. Overall, great experience - suggest bringing in analogy of birds - Eagle, Owl, Peacock, Dove - as seeding discussion on personality preferences. Using compass / spherical localities a bit confusing. - andy |
